Wine of the Day for January 4, 2010

Gewürztraminer

Gewürztraminer Many of my wine tasting guests who enjoy the sweeter wines indicate that they love Gewürztraminer. One of the reasons may be that this grape produces a spicy, very aromatic, slightly higher alcohol wine. My guests enjoy the flavors, as well as the higher alcohol, and all have a fun time pronouncing it!

Like Riesling, Gewürztraminer can range from dry to sweet, but is often dry, unless the grapes are late harvest. Common aromas and flavors are litchi, vanilla, grapefruit, honeysuckle, and spice. (I know, you’re thinking … ok, what does litchi smell like? To be completely honest, I’d have to say I have no idea, I’ll just have to enjoy the wine to continue to perfect my nose. It’s a terrific way to learn, don’t you think?!)

The spicy sweetness of the wine complements Asian foods, so if you’re feeling a little sassy or are in the mood for sweet and sour, you definitely want to consider this wine.

Cheers to full glasses all around!
